Abstract: In order to compare the relationship between physiological changes and germination rate in dormant buds of different varieties of apple and pear, their germination rate, content of soluble sugar, soluble protein and water were measured with the apple buds of ‘Shi Jie 1' ‘Chen Yang' and pear buds of ‘Jin Xiangmi' ‘Qiu Yue' and ‘Xin Li 7' from January to February in winter. The results showed that apple of ‘Shi Jie 1' was always higher than ‘Chen Yang' in the content of water, soluble sugar, soluble protein and germination rate, and the content of water in buds was significantly correlated with germination rate. There were significant differences in content of water, soluble sugar and soluble protein among the pear varieties. ‘Jin Xiangmi' was the highest according to the average membership function value, followed by ‘Qiu Yue', with ‘Xin Li 7' the lowest. However, the physiological indexes of pear were not related to germination rate.
