Abstract: Guard cells as specialized epidermal cells, play important roles in plant responses to environmental stresses through controlling stomatal movement, thereby plant water loss and gas exchange. Compared with other epidermal cells, guard cells demonstrate functional specificity. Therefore, isolation of single-type guard cells is necessary for clarifying the biological functions of guard cells with the application of fast developed omics methods. In this review, we summarized the recent advances in guard cells protoplast isolation of dicotyledonous plants and omics studies including transcriptomic, proteomic and metablomic data analysis, and provided well established references for the relevant studies in monocotyledonous crops.
