Abstract: Plant can adjust leaf microstructure to adapt to different environment. Here, we studied leaf vasculature and stomatal characteristics of Iris at different leaf age and leaf position. The results showed that vascular density and adaxial/abaxial stomatal density in newly developed leaves was higher than in young and mature leaves, whereas stomatal size was smaller. From leaf base to leaf tip, adaxial/abaxial stomatal density, longitudinal/transverse vein density, and total vein density gradually increased, whereas adaxial/ abaxial stomatal size and areolar area gradually decreased. It is concluded that metabolism is faster in newly developed leaves, and compared to leaf base and leaf tip, the middle part of leaf blade is more representative for the state of the whole leaf.
