Abstract: The effects of bitter melon (Momordica charantia) saponins, pumpkin (Cucurbita moschata) polysaccharides and buckwheat (Fagopyrum tataricum) flavones on glucose and lipid metabolism in hyperlipidemic rats were studied by single- dimensional statistical analysis combined with principal component analysis. The results showed that combined bitter melon saponins and pumpkin polysaccharide significantly improved levels of TC, FFA, CRE and LP compared with that of individual extracts (P<0.05). Bitter melon saponin and buckwheat flavones improved effect of TC, CRE and FFA significantly better than that of single component (P<0.05). PCA analysis also confirmed that the combined effect of active ingredients produced more improvement of glucose and lipid metabolism in hyperlipidemic rats by acting on different target pathways.

Key words: bitter melon (Momordica charantia) saponins, pumpkin (Cucurbita moschata) polysaccharides, buckwheat (Fagopyrum tataricum) flavones, hyperlipidemia, glucose and lipid metabolism, combined effect
