Abstract: The changes of the oxygen consumption rate, ammonia excretion rate, metabolic rate and excretion rate of juvenile Plectropomus leopardus lacépède were determined when the salinity changed abruptly from 30 to lower levels (25, 20, 15 salinity) and to a higher level (35 salinity). The results show that the oxygen consumption rate, ammonia excretion rate of juvenile Plectropomus leopardus lacépède displayed an increasing trend, and the significant difference was found between the salinity changed group and the control group (P<0.05), and with the increase range of salinity changed, the trend was even more obvious. The ratio of O:N all decreased whether the salinity changed to the lower salinity or higher salinity. The main materials involved in the basal metabolism of Plectropomus leopardus lacépède were protein and lipid, and then carbohydrate.
